Microsoft's plan was always to put their first-party video games into Game Pass on day one, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer. Recent rumours suggested that Activision's beloved shooter franchise Call of Duty might be an exception when it comes to day one releases on Game Pass but in a recent interview with Game File, Spencer rubbished those claims, and once again reiterated that the flagship series is indeed coming to their subscription service.
"Our intent is the full portfolio of games from ZeniMax, Activision Blizzard and XGS—Xbox Game Studios—will be on Game Pass, day one," Spencer said. While Spencer did not specifically name Call of Duty, he did offer additional comment that would explain why Activision Blizzard games have not been added to Game Pass.
According to Spencer, there's work to be done behind the scenes so both Xbox console and PC players can get these games at the same time. Makes sense as adding games to Game Pass is not as simple as pressing a single button.
The first big Activision Blizzard game to come to Game Pass will be hack-and-slash RPG Diablo 4, which arrives on March 28, 2024. Other titles should follow shortly but at this very moment, we do not have official confirmation of what these other games could be.
If we had to guess, we would say that the first big batch of additions would be some older titles like Call of Duty Advanced Warfare, WW2, Black Ops and other Activision games like Prototype, Spyro and Crash to name a few.
All in all, it's certainly great that Spencer clarified once again Microsoft's position on Game Pass and first-party launches on this service.
Game Pass is one of the biggest selling points of the Xbox ecosystem, especially now with all those Bethesda and Activision Blizzard games coming in, so it would be a disastrous situation if Microsoft suddenly decided to abandon day-one launches.
Luckily, that won't be happening anytime soon which is great news for us as we're really excited about Xbox's first-party output for the coming years.
