Wilderdark is Junkfish’s newest first-person survival horror game, set for release sometime in 2026. The game’s announcement trailer also teases a playable demo launching to Steam on May 7.
Wilderdark continues the studio’s survival horror efforts first seen with Monstrum. However, Wilderdark is much more focused on grounded exploration and survival-based gameplay than horror-centered action and scares.
Players will find themselves on an isolated island overrun by wildlife and vegetation mutated by an ectoparasitic anomaly present on the island. Local wildlife as well as foreign wildlife seem mutated and hostile to the player, encouraging stealth and avoidance.
Wilderdark begins with players taking control of an operative sent to survey an island full of predatory wildlife mutated by the island’s anomaly. Alongside surveying the island’s wildlife, your goal is to find out what happened to your predecessors who previously set out to explore the island, one of whom shares a familial connection to you.
Combat won’t be necessary, or at least heavily featured, as the wildlife you’ll encounter is large and deadly. Instead players are encouraged to stay stealthy, hiding in the foliage and silently taking down hostiles when the chance presents itself.
Noise, light, and shadows all play into hiding from predators. Photography will also play a key role in Wilderdark. Alongside surveying the island and documenting findings with pictures will play into the overall progression.
Additionally, players will need to manage scarce resources to craft items and weapons from objects found around the island.
