Creative Assembly has announced Total War: Medieval III during the franchise's 25th anniversary showcase. Currently in early pre-production, the historical strategy game won't arrive for several years. The studio also teased a third unannounced Total War title revealing at The Game Awards on December 11th.

Creative Assembly has finally confirmed Total War: Medieval III exists, though fans shouldn't expect it anytime soon. Revealed during the franchise's 25th anniversary showcase, the historical strategy game remains in early pre-production, which means a multi-year development cycle lies ahead, given the studio's track record.

Live-action trailer

The announcement trailer adopts a live-action approach, featuring medieval kings discussing war, dignity, and enemies before cutting to the Medieval III logo with "in early development" prominently displayed. That disclaimer is doing heavy lifting, Creative Assembly's Total War games typically require extensive development periods, suggesting 2028 or later feels realistic for actual release.

Medieval III promises "the ultimate medieval strategy sandbox," combining historical authenticity with player agency to let players reshape realms and rewrite Middle Ages history. The studio frames it as both a tribute to the beloved Medieval II and a revolutionary reimagining of historical Total War mechanics.

Whether that ambition translates to something that feels innovative or it's just pure marketing speak remains entirely speculative without gameplay footage or concrete details.

But, Creative Assembly describing it as a "bold revolution" and "rebirth of historical Total War" certainly does set lofty expectations that the finished product will eventually need to meet.

Coming to consoles too

Creative Assembly also confirmed that all future Total War games will be coming to consoles, both PlayStation and Xbox. The game will obviously be PC focused primarily (or not? Looking at you, Football Manager 26).

"So, we're quite happy that the new engine also allows us to take our future titles on PlayStation and Xbox, as well as PC," Creative Assembly said (38:18).

Mysterious Game Awards announcement

Alongside Medieval III, Creative Assembly teased a surprise Total War title announcement at The Game Awards on December 11th. Unlike Medieval III's distant future, this mystery project represents "Total War's next major release", which suggests it arrives considerably sooner, possibly 2026 or 2027.

The studio calls it "one of the most ambitious projects in the franchise's history, marking the beginning of an exciting new era." That's delightfully vague whilst hyping expectations significantly. Whether it's historical, fantasy, or something entirely unexpected remains speculation until next week's reveal.
