After years of anticipation, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV is finally happening, and today, we got to see the first proper gameplay of this real-time strategy.
During the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct, publisher Deep Silver unveiled the first in-engine trailer, “Back to War,” giving fans a truly thrilling look at the next chapter in the iconic RTS franchise.
The trailer marks a dramatic return to Kronus, the setting of Dawn of War: Dark Crusade. Space Marines wage war against ferocious Ork hordes, bolstered by the Adeptus Mechanicus, in massive battles that explode across varied landscapes. But just as victory seems close, a new menace rises: the Necrons, surging onto the battlefield to shift the balance of power.
Visually, the reveal has left me quite impressed. The game’s levels burst with detail, be it a desert wasteland or freezing snow-covered terrain, animations look smooth and wonderful, and the chaos of large-scale strategy combat feels unmistakably Dawn of War.
The trailer also confirms the long-awaited return of base building, a mechanic many fans considered core to the franchise’s identity.
The footage, captured entirely in-engine, really feels like a love letter to the fans of this beloved strategy. It offers a genuine taste of what players can expect once they step back into the boots of the Imperium and beyond. The trailer closes with a fitting rallying cry: “At last, back to war!” Goosebumps!
Dawn of War IV promises a deep RTS experience set in the Warhammer 40K universe, featuring four playable factions, multiple non-linear campaigns, and returning fan-favourite modes like Last Stand and Skirmish.
The game is coming to Steam in 2026.
