Highguard is a free-to-play competitive shooter from veteran developers behind Apex Legends, Titanfall, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Players control Wardens, arcane gunslingers competing for control of a mythical continent, in PvP raids requiring teams to breach and destroy enemy bases. The game launches January 26, 2026 across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S with full cross-play support.
Highguard's core loop centres on battling rival Warden crews for control of the Shieldbreaker, then using that advantage to break into and destroy enemy bases.
The reveal showcases vibrant environments with crumbling castles, icy caverns, mystical landscapes, suggesting diverse and colourful map design. It's one of those visual styles that some may not dig but more on that later. Combat appears to blend guns with magical abilities, though exact class systems and ability depth weren't detailed.
Wildlight Entertainment launched in 2021, quietly developing Highguard over four years. Co-founders Dusty Welch (CEO) and Chad Grenier (Game Director) bring extensive experience from Respawn Entertainment's biggest hits.
"We created Wildlight because we wanted a game studio where design leads and new games can be built without compromise," Grenier explained. "Our time on Apex Legends and Titanfall taught us a lot about what it takes to build and sustain a successful franchise."
Overwhelmingly negative reception
Unfortunately, despite the flashy visuals and smooth-looking gameplay, the reveal didn't sit well with gamers. At the time of writing this article, Highguard trailer has 2,000 dislikes on YouTube with less than 400 likes.
In the comments, players are drawing comparisons with Sony's failed live service title Concord, which shut down shortly after an abymal launch. I do have to say that the design of some of the maps and characters is heavily reminiscent of Concord, but hopefully, this one won't suffer the same fate.
More information arrives throughout January leading to the January 26th launch. The game is available to wishlist on Steam now.
