The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is what Mass Effect: Andromeda should've been. It's what every Mass Effect fan would've wanted from a next-gen Mass Effect game.

Owlcat Games, the studio behind Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous and Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader, is stepping into new territory with The Expanse: Osiris Reborn–a story-driven sci-fi RPG set in the gritty universe of The Expanse. The game is being built in Unreal Engine 5 and will be launching on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

As expected, the comparisons with Mass Effect are already in full swing, which is not surprising. The game certainly looks like it aims to scratch that Mass Effect itch that us Mass Effect fans have had for more than a decade.

Anyway, if this one looks like it's up your alley, check out all the juicy story, gameplay and setting info below.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn story and setting

Osiris Reborn takes place during the early seasons of The Expanse TV series, placing players on Eros Station in the middle of a sudden and unexplained lockdown. You play as a Pinkwater Security officer caught in the chaos, with the narrative quickly expanding into larger questions around corporate power, interplanetary politics, and the shadow of the protomolecule.

Rather than following known characters, the game introduces a new original cast while staying true to the tone and lore of the series. Players can choose their background — Earther, Martian, or Belter — which influences dialogue options and how other factions respond to your choices.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn gameplay

Unlike Owlcat’s previous games, Osiris Reborn features real-time third-person combat with tactical squad commands. Combat plays out in cover-based encounters, with weapons, grenades, and gadgets playing key roles. Zero-G environments also add a layer of strategy, requiring players to navigate using magnetic boots and environmental tools.

You’ll recruit a team of companions, each with their own personalities and backstories, and make decisions that shape their loyalty — and potentially lead to romance. While the narrative has a clear structure, Owlcat emphasizes that choices will affect both the ending and how characters evolve along the way.

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an original story

The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is an original story that expands on the universe without retreading old ground. For fans of rich world-building, tactical gameplay, and branching RPG narratives, this looks like a strong new chapter for both Owlcat and The Expanse franchise.
