The Division 2 will feature a 40ish hour story mode that can be played solo or cooperatively. The developers Massive Entertainment said that the story is designed first and foremost with endgame in mind which was a much-requested change.

According to The Division 2 developers Massive Entertainment, players will have more than 40 hours of story mode to complete before reaching the endgame content. The story can be played in solo and co-op mode just like in The Division and it's designed with endgame in mind which was something that a lot of fans asked for.

The Division 2's story will be almost double the length of those of The Division. In the original game, players could finish the main storyline in approximately 10 to 20 hours, depending on their playstyle.

Of course, this is without the additional content such as side missions and collectables as players would have to invest a bit more time for full completion. It's unclear if The Division 2's main storyline will be 40 hours long or the number is the total time required to complete the main story and side quests.

Ubisoft shared a first look at the story in one of the recent trailers which revealed four unnamed factions. They are described as "religious outcasts", "depraved fascists" and "roaving packs of hyenas" while fourth, military-themed faction was pretty similar to Last Man Battalion from The Division. Their leader also appeared in one of the shots commanding his soldiers to "terminate any Division agents with extreme prejudice".

The sequel will take place seven months after the virus outbreak in New York, and it focuses on rebuilding and "saving the nation from a total collapse". According to The Division 2's Associate Creative Director Chadi El-Zibaouim, the sequel will be filled with characters and survivors who will add deeper story and context which was something that the original lacked.

"The Division 2 is very focused on the survivors, as well as how they’ve been changing and organizing themselves during these seven months. Now civilians are banding together, organizing and arming themselves, trying to rebuild what is left not just resigning themselves to the situation," said El-Zibaoui in GamingBolt interview.
