Some surprising news coming from Tencent as they confirmed the development of Syn, an open-world cyberpunk first-person shooter coming to PC and consoles.
During this weekend's annual conference, Tencent aired a short demo that isn't that rich in gameplay, in spite of the "demo gameplay" title. Having replayed it a bunch of times though, we can't wait to see more.
Syn is being developed by Tencent's internal studio Lightspeed & Quantum Studios, whom you may know from their work on PUBG Mobile.
It's certainly reassuring knowing that PUBG Mobile is killing it on the revenue front, deservedly so, and we hope the studio can extend their winning formulas onto PC and consoles, at which Syn is aimed.
There aren't many details at the moment, but Syn's short demo showcases some features like extensive character and vehicle customisation options.
Tencent's relationship with Epic Games seems to have played a part beyond the confirmed usage of Unreal Engine. The video states that Syn's strand-based hair system has been developed in cooperation with Sweeney and Co. The realism is not coincidental and it's said that this system may end up being used on a wider scale down the line.
Syn players can choose between three factions, where each faction also brings own customisable pets. You can see the cheetah and bear companions in the video, and they certainly look combat-ready, even if Tencent didn't explain their exact role in the open-world shooter.
At the moment, details are scarce but we'll be keeping an eye out. While there's no doubt that Cyberpunk 2077 has given the genre a much-needed mainstream spotlight, Syn definitely doesn't look like a knock-off, quite the contrary, but we should find out soon enough.
