The next instalment in the Subnautica franchise will be a live service game with multiplayer elements

Subnautica 2 is being built on Unreal Engine 5 and will be a live service game with single-player and four-player co-op, Krafton revealed in their latest earnings report.

Update: In their new statement, developer Unknown worlds have provided more context regarding the "live service" aspect of Subnautica 2. The team have made it very clear that live service means Subnautica 2 will be updated for many years to come after launch, similar to two previous Subnautica games.

The game won't feature season passes or battle passes and it's not multiplayer-focused. Co-op is in the works but it will be entirely optional. They also stated that players should not expect early access release date in 2024.

Original article: Publisher Krafton have today released their Q4 2023 earnings report which includes an update for their upcoming video games. One of these upcoming games is Subnautica 2, the sequel to Unknown Worlds' mega-popular underwater survival title.

In a very brief note, Krafton describe Subnautica 2 as a "multiplayer sequel to the original IP pursuing fandom snowballing". The publisher reveal that the game will feature stylised graphics, powered by Epic's Unreal Engine 5. Subnautica and Subnautica Below Zero both used Unity Engine, so this is the first big change for the franchise and the dev studio.

Additionally, the plan is to have a four-player co-op but those who prefer surviving on their own will be able to do so in single-player. Another big change is the shift to a "games-as-a-service" model. Krafton state they aim for enhanced replayability.

Other than that, Krafton did not share more details about the third Subnautica game. We expect to start hearing more info later this year and potentially see the first gameplay trailer at one of the big summer games showcases like The Summer Game Fest or the Xbox Showcase in June.

We still don't know what exactly Subnautica 2 is set to bring in terms of the world and new gameplay mechanics but you can certainly expect a strong focus on base building and exploration.

Obviously, we expect a massive improvement in visuals thanks to Unreal Engine 5 features like Lumen and Nanite, both of which should make the game's underwater world a proper eye candy.

Subnautica 2 is expected to release in 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch version is probably in development too, given that both
