Bethesda has released patch notes for the newest update for Starfield. The update's beta version is now live on Steam and will be available for all players on May 15.
Bethesda is finally adding improved surface maps with this update. Bethesda states, “We’ve heard your feedback, and we’ve made some big improvements to surface maps, so you’ll always know just where to go and no longer ‘get lost’ on the way to your parents’ place (and they weren’t buying that excuse anyway; you should really go visit them).”
Aside from the new detailed surface maps, the new update will also add display settings for Xbox Series X, new ship decorations and a new difficulty menu. Here's a complete look at everything new in the update.
Starfield is getting a massive update in May
The most significant part of this new Starfield update is the improved surface maps. The new improvement on surface maps is the addition of more details, which has been a community demand since the game's launch.
Xbox Series X users are getting new display settings for Starfield with the update on May 15. After player feedback on control over graphic fidelity and performance from Xbox users, Bethesda has decided to implement the following changes:
Frame Rate Target: You can now choose between 30, 40, 60, or an uncapped frame rate on VRR displays. If you do not have a VRR display running 120 Hz, you will still be able to select from 30 or 60. However, screen tearing may occur at times when selecting 60 on a non-VRR display.
Prioritise: You can now prioritise between visuals and performance while trying to maintain the frame rate target. If you’re choosing a frame rate target of 60 or above, we recommend changing this to Performance.
Prioritising visuals keeps the highest resolution while maintaining full detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds. However, prioritising performance lowers internal resolution and detail for special effects, lighting, and crowds.
Both modes may adjust internal resolution dynamically when scenes or action get heavier as well. When switching between modes, you will see the lighting change briefly as the system catches up to the new mode.
Aside from these new in-game additions, Bethesda has also deployed changes to different in-game features, which include numerous bug fixes, outpost changes, and graphical improvements.
