Video games industry analysts expect sales of only 270,000 PSVR2 units by the end of March 2023. A significant price cut could also be on the way for the expensive virtual reality device.
Sony's PSVR2 device launched back in February 2023 but it failed to gain traction due to its expensive price tag of $549.99 / £529.99/ €599.9. That certainly isn't cheap especially when you need to buy a PlayStation 5 console too, which is of a similar price.
Many predicted that PSVR2 wouldn't do well in terms of sales and after just over a month on the market, PSVR2 is off to a very slow start. According to Bloomberg's latest report , Sony are projected to sell fewer than 300,000 PSVR2 headsets in its first weeks on the market.
Industry analyst Francisco Jeronimo expects a price cut very soon if Sony want to avoid a complete disaster in terms of sales. The price of the package is undoubtedly what holds PSVR2 back and if Sony are looking to sell the virtual reality device at higher numbers, they'll have to make some adjustments on that front.
Some reports already suggested that Sony are disappointed with poor pre-orders for PSVR2. And while it does appear that PSVR2 isn't doing well at the moment, many PlayStation fans are still interested in the device as can be seen in various polls and comments online.
However, many say that their interest will result in a purchase only if the price is lower so the price cut from Sony could be the right move for this expensive piece of hardware.
It will certainly be interesting to see if Sony officially announce a price deduction for PSVR2 in the coming weeks and months. While the device is still only a month on the market, it perhaps had more chance to shine if the price was right on launch.
