The Shyvana rework, which had been highly in need and in the League of Legends pipeline for years, seemed to now be pushed back even further.
Unfortunately, the announcement nudged discontent among the League of Legends community as players again questioned Riot Games' priorities when it comes to updating some of the game's older champions.
The rework of Shyvana was first announced in 2019, when Riot shared plans to refresh her gameplay and visuals. Unfortunately, things have since been slow, not to say more complicated. According to some insiders, the developer initially working on her rework got laid off.
Riot has only shown one concept for her update and nothing too major has been shown since. Shyvana was a notable absentee on the lineup of champions for when Riot announced their thematic upcoming seasons, leaving many hung in the air as to the date of her eventual release.
Riot's latest on Shyvana
Riot developer Meddler commented on this situation recently, but he didn't leave much hope for 2025 either. Shyvana does not have a scheduled rework in 2025, as the first season of the year will largely consist of Noxus-themed content.
Of course, Riot Games could revisit an update for her when dragons or transformations are in a theme, but neither of those is scheduled for next year.
Seasonal themes
Riot also updates champions to fit the in-season theme these days and Shyvana's full update will likely wait until her character fits a theme or she is deemed a good candidate for updates.
This delay with Shyvana's rework reflects challenges Riot faces when it comes to champion updates. Riot has more than 60 champions that need updates, which can't make it easy to balance new releases with reworks.
Shyvana's rework needs to be thematically appropriate for the seasonal theme she is going to be released in. This adds delays.
Slow development
Riot often receives criticism from its fans, who even joke about how some updates could take decades. The Shyvana rework is not canceled, but there isn't a clear timeline for it.
According to developer Meddler, it could fit into any Dragon, transformation, or Demacia-themed season, and none of these are scheduled for 2025.
Meanwhile, champions like LeBlanc are confirmed to get updates during the Noxus season. This begs a big question: what happens in cases where champion updates just don't align with current themes, as is the case with someone like Shyvana?
For now, fans will have to continue waiting in hopes that Riot delivers a satisfying rework in the future.
