Tencent and PUBG Corp to hold a $600K PUBG Mobile tournament

PUBG Corp and Tencent Games have announced a mobile esports tournament dubbed the PUBG Mobile Star Challenge. It starts on 29 September 2018 in Kiev, Ukraine, and ends in Dubai, UAE, at the end of 2018, with a hefty $600K prize pool.

The PUBG Mobile Star Challenge will feature six teams representing Europe, Asia, North America, South America, Japan/Korea and China. Sponsored by Samsung Galaxy Note 9, the tournament will hold qualifiers in each of the regions, with top 40 qualifiers going into regional finals, except for Asia which will provide 60 teams.

According to the game's website, PUBG Mobile Star Challenge focuses on celebrity streamers from all of the six regions, where Tencent and PUBG Corp intend to test their skills as well as their popularity. In fact, having a teammate with 1,000 subscribers on any of the popular streaming platforms is a prerequisite for entry into the tournament.

Over the course of the tournament's preliminaries, each team will play 15 PUBG Mobile matches, with the top 10 results being taken into account. You can check out the PUBG Mobile Star Challenge's qualifier ranking scores in the table below.

The 40/60 qualifying teams will advance to the regional finals, where the winner will become the official PUBG Mobile streamer for the region. The winning team will receive $20,000, while runner up and third place will win $15,000 and $10,000, respectively. Additionally, the most popular player in the regional finals will earn $10,000.

Winners of those will qualify for the global finals in Dubai, which feature $200,000, $100,000 and $50,000 prizes for first, second and third placed teams. Tencent Games said that partaking in the Global Finals of PUBG Mobile Star Challenge and making the all-star team earns you a chance to "represent the tournaments and get global exposure".

All in all, the PUBG Mobile's tournament in no way suggests we're talking about mobile gaming, showing a clear intent by Tencent to nurture the esports spirit of their mobile iteration of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds. It also shows why PUBG Mobile in popularity, unlike its big brother.
