Rumours about the new Switch console have been swirling around the internet for quite a while but so far, Nintendo have been pretty silent on the matter. It's safe to assume that the company are working on a successor to their globally popular console but nothing has been officially confirmed so far.
However, reliable reports are coming from the Japanese financial newspaper Nikkei, who claim that Nintendo could launch Switch 2 or whatever the name of the new console is, sometime in March 2025, at the earliest.
The report further states that the console is expected to be both handheld and dockable, just like the current Switch model that offers both of these ways to play.
Many industry analysts and insiders suggested that Nintendo could launch their new console in 2024 but according to the Nikkei report, one of the key reasons behind the delay is due to the initial stock. Nintendo want to have as many consoles as possible on the shelves to prevent re-selling, which is something that happened with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles.
Another reason for the slight delay is the actual games. Nintendo apparently want to launch a new console with big new games and in order to do that, they had to push the release of the hardware into 2025.
Earlier rumours suggested that the Switch successor comes with a larger screen than the current Switch. Players can also expect improved hardware, better image quality and other big features that we usually expect from a new-generation console,
Nintendo Switch is one of the best-selling consoles in history so it's safe to assume that the successor will fly off the shelves too. It will be interesting to see how Nintendo handles the backwards compatibility which could be one of the key selling points of this new console if Nintendo allows their users to bring over their full library of games.
