Sony has released a new system update for the PlayStation Portal system. The update, which begins rolling out worldwide on March 18, includes a number of enhancements to Remote Play and Cloud Streaming designed to improve visual quality and overall usability.
Sony says usage has grown significantly since their last system update, with usage of cloud streaming going “through the roof” and over 50% of Portal users subscribing to PlayStation Plus Premium.
In addition to performance improvements, this update also includes new visual settings, interface improvements, and a streamlined onboarding experience to make PlayStation Portal feel even smoother.
New 1080p High Quality Mode
Alongside improvements to Remote Play usability, Sony has introduced a new High Quality mode when streaming games in 1080p. This setting allows games to stream at a higher bitrate than the default setting, providing improved clarity and smoothness.
Players can access this new feature from the Quick Menu while playing games remotely with either Remote Play or Cloud Streaming.
Cloud Streaming Improvements
Sony has also made a number of smaller changes designed to help improve overall Cloud Streaming usability. These smaller adjustments are designed to remove friction when navigating the Portal’s interface.
Highlights include:
- Individual game selection on product pages within game bundles
- On-screen alerts when invited to play games while streaming
- Improved trophy notifications that include the name and image of the trophy earned, as well as special animations for earning Platinum trophies
- Revamped Search functionality with keyboard input available more quickly
- Better overall integration for active players
Onboarding Improvements
New users will also experience a smoother onboarding process as part of the update. Creating a PlayStation account has been made simpler for users who don’t already have one through a simplified creation tool.
Account registration and sign in can now be done much quicker by scanning a QR code with your phone.
This is yet another quality of life feature Sony is implementing to improve the PlayStation Portal experience while also refining performance as adoption of cloud gaming increases.
