Analysts now believe that we could see a longer wait for the PS6 than many experts originally thought. Recent estimates have aimed towards a launch period in late 2028, sometime in 2029, or “even later.”
The world is currently dealing with a RAM shortage, increasing memory prices, and reports that Sony plans on stretching the PS5’s lifespan. Senior analyst David Gibson from Sandstone Insight Japan told that Sony plans on stretching the PS5 lifespan and that a PS6 will arrive “later than many expected.”
He didn’t give an exact timeframe but did say that it’s unlikely we’ll see one this generation if the economy stays in this state.Rumors had placed the console’s launch window between 2027 and 2028, but we may have to wait if things don’t look up.
The report further explains that RAM prices are higher than normal and will remain that way due to the lack of supply. We’re currently in the midst of a RAM shortage as AI datacenters are buying up a lot of the supply, pushing up prices.
This will impact PlayStation’s ability to create a next-gen console by the dates they originally planned. The report says manufacturers will either have to delay their next consoles or sell them at a premium.
Another report made it clear that Sony will most likely wait it out until prices are back to normal and they have enough supply of next-gen RAM (like GDDR7) to work with.
If prices don’t come down by 2026, we may even be looking at a release as far as 2029. However, a recent leak said that Sony has no plans on delaying the PS6 as they are on schedule to produce a custom PlayStation 6 APU with AMD in mid-2027.
