Frontier Developments has dropped the second episode of its Feature Focus series for their upcoming zoo sim Planet Zoo 2, and this one takes zoo managers underwater. Titled Awesome Aquatics, the video walks through how aquariums come together and the marine, freshwater and brackish life you'll be looking after once they're built.
The good news for anyone who's already spent hours in the terrestrial side of the game is that aquarium construction follows a similar process to building land-based habitats, so the learning curve should be short. Blueprints from the Frontier Workshop are also on hand for players who want to skip some of the tedius legwork.
Glass tunnels are one of the headline additions, letting guests walk directly through the exhibit for an up-close view of the animals swimming overhead. Staff get their own dedicated aquarium gate too, so vets and keepers can get in to check on animals and top up feeders without disturbing the display for visitors.
Sharks, rays and a proper mix of species
Planet Zoo 2 is bringing a wide range of aquatic species to the game, including turtles, rays, various fish and sharks. The video specifically calls out the Hawksbill Turtle, Ocean Sunfish and Brown Trout among the animals players will need to look after, spanning marine, freshwater and brackish habitats, each requiring its own filtration setup.
Not every species can be housed together, so there's a bit of planning involved in working out which animals are compatible unless you want one of them to end in other's belly. Shoals will also grow over time, and if a freshwater aquarium gets overcrowded, players can release surplus fish into the lakes of their wildlife reserves. The video shows this in action with African tigerfish released into the same reserve as zebras, which Frontier says helps build more diverse ecosystems.
The next Feature Focus episode is confirmed to move above ground, offering a closer look at birds that we'll see in Planet Zoo 2.
