Phantom Blade Zero’s director has shared new details about the upcoming wuxia action RPG, including combat mechanics, progression depth, and when fans can expect a release date announcement.

Fans of action RPGs got a glimpse into Phantom Blade Zero during the Future Games Show this past weekend. Director Soulframe Liang was on hand to talk a bit more about the title’s direction, scale, and design elements as part of the panel.

Hailed as a “playable kung fu movie,” the action RPG is a marriage between some inspired martial arts action, a heavy dose of directing, and of course, RPG elements.

Directing is no afterthought for Phantom Blade Zero as Liang confirmed the team is motion-capturing animations for the martial arts system directly from kung fu masters.

The main draw for players will be getting to dip into the available gear pool, as the game currently features 30+ main hand weapons and over 20 off-hand weapons.

Paired into custom loadouts, each offers a different fighting style and playstyle, something Liang described as a priority in their vision to make an authentic and large-scale Chinese kung fu game.

Exploration and story are pillars in the Phantom Blade Zero experience. Liang commented the game is taking a different approach to modern titles that feature more direct cues and hand-holding with white arrows and boxes.

In this game, players will be given tools like the hand-drawn map to help them navigate Phantom World, but exploration is still intended to reward players for delving into optional and supplemental areas.

Liang also noted that players will likely only complete 30–40% of the content during a first playthrough. The Phantom Blade Zero demo available during the show is even a level crafted by the hands of the team in a side level that many will likely skip over as they venture through the title.

Phantom Blade Zero is on the way to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Steam and the Epic Games Store. Phantom Blade Zero is published and developed by S-GAME. The action RPG follows assassin Soul as he uncovers a conspiracy revolving around the death of the patriarch of The Order.
