Well, it finally happened. Microsoft's Perfect Dark reboot is not vaporware after all. Developer The Initiative and the co-developer Crystal Dynamics finally unveiled a brand new trailer for this highly anticipated spy thriller at the Xbox Games Showcase.
The trailer featured lengthy gameplay footage, showing agent Joanna Dark on a mission in the narrow streets of futuristic Kairo, which is the game's main setting.
The gameplay sequence revealed a smart use of gadgets to confuse enemies while Joanna slips behind their backs in classic stealth fashion, which reminded me a lot of Deus Ex.
We also got to see parkour, wall running and jumping across large gaps in true Mirror's Edge fashion so Perfect Dark gameplay could be best described as a mix of these two titles.
The Initiative say the game is a mix of various genres including immersive sim, first-person shooter and stealth, which blend seamlessly into one action title.
Players will be able to tackle missions in various ways as seen in the gameplay trailer. You can go full stealth, run and gun or mix both playstyles. The game will allow for various playthroughs, according to the devs.
"The developers tell me that the focus was on creating an intuitive movement system, which will let players find interesting ways to tackle their objectives.
Add to that a combat system that allows for both melee and gunplay, stealth mechanics, and liberal use of gadgets, and Perfect Dark is a game that will present players with an objective, but let them figure out how they want to achieve it," it's revealed on the Xbox Wir blog post.
Perfect Dark still does not have a release date, which suggests we will need to wait a bit longer before we get to play it. My guess is that the game is probably targeting a late 2025 or early 2026 release window.
It will launch on PC, Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass.
