A player was jokingly reported merely for conversing with the message "2ez," which made the reporting system in Overwatch 2 Season 10 take drastic measures. Saying something like "2ez" isn't offensive; at worst, it's just fun trash talk, which is something that most Overwatch 2 players would agree is a part of the game.
The player was nonetheless subjected to a penalty, presumably a ban that shouldn't have been imposed in the first place.
Moreover, the player who filed the report went to great lengths to ensure that it appeared to be a joke, including creating a personalised note that read, "It hurt my feelings." This implies that the person, team, or system in charge of rendering decisions is applying the concept too strictly and without considering the fact that it was obvious that the report was created as a prank.
How did the community react to this incident?
The Overwatch 2 community is taking an entirely different look at this system as a result of this, and they are wondering whether or not some adjustments are necessary in order to achieve a more balanced experience.
Since the report was effective in having the player banned, the simple fact that it was accepted raises questions about whether somebody actually reviews the reports that are submitted or if everything is handled by a computer.
Social media users are already hearing rumours that trolls are taking advantage of this system to ban anyone at will, even when they haven't done anything wrong. It might be extremely harmful to the game if that threat existed in the community.
How is Blizzard handling the situation?
As of right now, Blizzard has not stated whether or not it plans to make any modifications. The lack of transparency will only make the supporters furious. Even worse, individuals will stop playing the game completely out of fear of being banned for no reason.
The developers of Overwatch 2 need to figure out a solution to stop banning people for doing nothing but having fun if they want to remain at the top.
And if the speculation among fans is true that the system isn't being "overwatched" by humans, then we already know the simplest solution for this, and that is assigning people specifically to review these complaints.
