Overkill's shooter The Walking Dead hasn't had the greatest of starts, with many players pointing at the $60 entry fee as a bit too steep, which led to Starbreeze and Overkill rolling out the Starter Edition of the game that goes for $30.
The company said they're well aware that the pricing of Overkill's The Walking Dead has been an issue for many players and they've been thinking about ways to address it. “Having read your comments and thoughts about how best to move forward, we’re introducing the Starter Edition”, they wrote.
So, the Starter Edition of Overkill's The Walking Dead comes with all the bells and whistles of the standard edition, except for the Season 2 content. The developer went for episodic releasing of missions within the seasons and Season 2 has just started.
Players who end up liking the game can purchase Season 2 episodic content separately. As usual though, it's likely to be pricier than purchasing the entire thing but it's an option nevertheless.
Thankfully, Overkill's The Walking Dead won't leave you fully hanging because you'll still be able to get a taste of the Season 2 if you have a friend that bought the full version. These players can invite Starter Edition owners to join them for two Season 2 missions, which is a nice way to let players try before they buy.
Overkill's The Walking Dead the greatest of starts since it launched on 06 December. Starbreeze explained that the unexpected higher percentage of sales in low-price countries like Russia and China have led to encouraging volumes but disappointing dollar sales.
Their woes are further compounded by the $10 million owed for the rights to The Walking Dead intellectual property. Starbreeze said that the company's fourth-quarter results will not recognize this amount as revenue, although their actual plans for the game will not be affected by this.
