Obsidian Entertainment are reportedly working on Avowed 2, and have no plans to make another Outer Worlds game for the time being. This is according to industry veteran and former Obsidian dev Chris Avellone, best known for Fallout: New Vegas, Planescape: Torment, and the original Pillars of Eternity.
Avowed launched earlier this year on PC and Xbox Series X|S and it received mostly positive reviews from the critics and gamers.
Avowed 2 Reportedly In Development at Obsidian
Avellone shared the rumour via social media X on November 6th, stating that apart from some DLC plans for the recently released Outer Worlds 2, Obsidian will now move on to Avowed 2. If this is true, it would mean that Avowed was a success for Microsoft, even though its Steam player count wasn't that strong.
Still, we know Microsoft measure success in their own way, due to Game Pass, and it appears that Avowed was one of the most played games on the popular subscription service in 2025.
Personally, I enjoyed Avowed and gave it a 85 out of 100. The game's combat and exploration were particularly impressive, though, Obsidian should focus on world interactivity, size and cinematic presentation in the sequel.
I'm also eager to see how Obsidian approach the sequel - are they merging The Outer Worlds and Avowed teams to create a big open-world RPG or they are keeping their smaller teams intact resulting in another modestly scoped game? That one will be interesting to watch.
The Outer Worlds franchise shelved?
Judging by Avellone's tweet, we might not get another Outer Worlds game anytime soon. One of the reasons for that could be simply due to the fact that The Outer Worlds is not doing that well in terms of sales. It's all down to Benjamins in the end and that's probably the case here.
Another thing, which is a bit more exciting, is that Obsidian are working on Fallout New Vegas 2 and The Outer Worlds team is handling that. This would be music to my and many RPG fans' ears no doubt about it but apart from some weak rumours, there's nothing concrete on New Vegas 2 so don't get your hopes up just yet.
