On the back of an eventful E3, NPD's Mat Piscatella discussed current gaming technology trends and delivered his predictions for the rest of 2019, where Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and publisher Nintendo take the centre stage.

In terms of topics covered, E3 2019 wasn't much different from its predecessor, focusing on next-gen consoles, streaming and subscriptions, in addition to games of course.

Piscatella was particularly impressed with Nintendo, saying that "Nintendo backed up its current position as market leader with a targeted blast of upcoming content that will likely solidify it for at least the next 18 months, if not longer."

So far in 2019, Nintendo is easily the best selling platform in the US, beating Microsoft and Sony's ageing consoles each month by hefty margins, which led to Piscatella's assertion that they're "silently winning".

"Nintendo Switch is the most important piece of Video Game hardware in the market right now. I expect Nintendo Switch sales to continue at a strong pace, Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield to drive both significant software and hardware sales volume, and Nintendo to finish as the year's best-selling software publisher", he wrote.

When it comes to video game sales, NPD's money is on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, remake of the iconic instalment, which does seem to command a healthy dose of hype at the moment.

He expects Take-Two Interactive's NBA 2K20 and EA's Madden NFL 20 to follow in second and third place, respectively, while Gearbox's Borderlands 3 and EA's Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order complete the top five.

Mortal Kombat 11 is expected to end up sixth, followed by Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Breakpoint and Hideo Kojima's long-awaited  PS4 exclusive Death Stranding, whose 9-minute trailer failed to explain anything of importance, impressively so.

Speaking of unanswered questions, Piscatella thinks that Google was surprisingly vague on some key issues that are likely to dictate Stadia's adoption, which is why he thinks they won't make a significant impact in 2019.
