Alexey Pajitnov, the man behind one of the greatest games ever, Tetris, recently gave an interview, where he talked about how Tetris came to Game Boy, his hatred of the cube piece and his track record in Tetris 99, which could be better.
You'd expect Tetris' creator to be a monster in-game but admittedly, he isn't that great. In fact, Pajitnov told Nintendo Life that his best Tetris 99 ranking is third-placed, and that he sticks to more casual circles.
Discussing Tetris' appeal today is an easy affair, but not many are aware of how Pajitnov's blockbuster, pun intended, came to be featured on Nintendo Game Boy, especially knowing that its competitor for being included in the Game Boy bundle was Super Mario, Nintendo's own IP.
"[Nintendo] asked, 'Why not Mario?” Henk [Rodgers, founder of the Tetris Company]’s response to that was if they want kids to play Game Boy, it should be Mario. But if they want everyone to play Game Boy, it should be Tetris. And the right decision has been made", he said.
Pajitnov also discussed his most and least favourite Tetris pieces, which may seem mundane, but we dare you to find someone who doesn't have their own favourite. Seriously, must be an OCD thing or something.
Pajitnov said, "I don't like the square. It's dumb. You don't rotate it, you don't do anything with it. You don't clear a lot of lines. And you don't get any benefits of placing it."
Apparently, the I-shaped long piece, which is surely among the top piece contenders, is called the angel, and it's not hard to see why.
He, however, prefers the J-piece. "I have to work hard when I'm on the left corner, so every time, the J-piece is better than L-piece because on the right side I have no problem. I don't know why. Probably because I always rotate clockwise. J-piece is my saviour, it's very helpful. T-piece is also very good, but my favourite is J-piece", he said.
