In the latest interview, Nioh 2 produced Fumihiko Yasuda stated that the release of PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is a perfect opportunity to revive the beloved Ninja Gaiden series.
It's been almost eight years since Team Ninja released the last major Ninja Gaiden game - Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge - an enhanced port of the third game that included all DLC and other additions. Additionally, the publisher Koei Tecmo released a small, spin-off title and we have been waiting ever since for a brand new Ninja Gaiden game.
Some rumours stated that the series could return as an exclusive for Xbox Series X but this was never confirmed by reliable sources.
And despite never releasing a single Ninja Gaiden for all these years, it seems that Team Ninja have big plans for the franchise. According to Fumihiko Yasuda, the director of Nioh 2, Ninja Gaiden is an important franchise for the studio and they would love to revive the series.
"Ninja Gaiden is an incredibly important franchise to both myself and Team Ninja. I'm always looking for any opportunity to revive the series," he said in an interview with Noisypixel.
Additionally, it looks like the new consoles have reignited Team Ninja's wish to work on another game. According to Yasuda, this could be perfect timing to revive it. "While we worked on the Nioh series on PS4, the fact that we were unable to release a new Ninja Gaiden title is something that I think about often. With the new consoles now released, I think that this is the perfect time to release a new entry in the series," he added.
Despite these comments, it will probably take a while before we hear more about the next Ninja Gaiden game. Judging by Yasuda's words, the studio are still considering whether to do another Ninja Gaiden game or not. Of course, it's also possible that they are just teasing us and the work on a new game is already underway but don't get your hopes up just yet, at least until we get a confirmation that the game is indeed coming.
