Crystal Dynamics have officially announced that they've started working on a brand new Tomb Raider game, which is being made in Unreal Engine 5.
Tomb Raider fans rejoice. Crystal Dynamics have just announced there is a brand new Tomb Raider game in development. During today's State of Unreal live stream, where Epic Games and their partners talked about Unreal Engine 5 and their projects, Crystal Dynamics closed the live stream with a special announcement, to confirm that their next Tomb Raider game will be built on Unreal Engine 5.
Shortly after the reveal, Crystal Dynamics Twitter account confirmed the news with a short statement.
"Crystal Dynamics is incredibly excited about the future of Unreal and how it will help us take our storytelling to the next level. That's why we're proud to announce that our next Tomb Raider game is being built on Unreal Engine 5," the developer tweeted.
The Tomb Raider series by Crystal Dynamics previously used the Foundation engine, which was initially built by the studio themselves. We have to say that all three games looked spectacular on release and played well so this switch to Unreal Engine 5 does come as a mild surprise, though, some may argue that there is no surprise whatsoever here given how even bigger studios like CD Projekt Red are switching to Epic Games' toolset.
All in all, we cannot wait to see what Crystal Dynamics have in store for the next Tomb Raider game, regardless of the game's engine.
