Xbox Series X|S failed to create momentum in Europe where PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch are dominating the console market.

Xbox Series X|S sales are down 52 per cent year-on-year according to the latest console sales data from GSD. Xbox Series X|S is also down 20 per cent month-on-month.

The console hardware sales data from GSD cover a total of ten European countries including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Italy, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

While the data does not cover every European country and lacks major markets like the UK and Germany, it still includes enough to give us an idea of how slow Xbox Series X|S console sales have been in this part of the world.

On the other hand, Sony's PlayStation 5 has seen nothing but success, with sales boosting 143 per cent year-on-year. This is thanks to increased supply, big console bundles including the most recent one with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and obviously, PlayStation's brand power and first-party games like Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and God of War: Ragnarok.

Nintendo Switch sales are also very strong but down year-on-year 20 per cent and 10 per cent month-on-month.

PlayStation 5 is selling like hotcakes in Europe

So, what does all this mean for Xbox? Well, it's not a great situation and Microsoft themselves would certainly love to take some of the market share from Sony by selling more Xbox Series X|S consoles, especially in Europe, where they are traditionally behind PlayStation.

However, that's easier said than done as Xbox don't have consoles to sell in Europe by the looks of it. The supply has been low ever since the launch two years ago, prices are still high and the lack of marketing and console bundles is hurting the sales too.

Xbox have recently kicked off a major marketing campaign called Power Your Dreams, taking over the popular Las Vegas Sphere but such a strong push is yet to be seen all over Europe.

It remains to be seen if things change now that Microsoft officially completed the acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Call of Duty is obviously the big fish that Xbox can use to move more consoles but the big question is - Are Microsoft actually that interested in outselling PlayStation 5 or does their focus lie on expanding Game Pass elsewhere? Time will tell.
