Funcom and The Bearded Ladies have announced that Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden will release on 04 December 2018, just in time for the holiday season. The announcement came via a rather weird trailer, although it's only as odd as the game.
One might expect that a turn based game would be presented in a more strategic manner, but then again, Funcom did show us gameplay before, including stealth mechanics that hasn't exactly been a prominent feature in turn based tactics games. It was therefore time for something weird, like pig insemination in a video game trailer.
Normally, it would have nothing to do with a game, but Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden has already shown mutated humanoids at player's disposal, and two out of three of them have animal-like appearances. Bormin, for example, looks like a humanoid pig and he is featured at the end of the trailer as he smashes the door down after we've seen a tiny piglet being born.
Considering there is a growing interest for turn based tactics games, it is definitely an interesting prospect to see Mutant Year Zero taking a slight step away from the formula set by XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the same one that reignited gamers' interest in the genre.
Mutant Year Zero will not stop there though and the available mutations, which work similarly to level-up perks or abilities, will allow players to customise their troops further, adding another RPG layer to the game. With names such as moth wings and stone skin, one might find them reminiscent of the abilities in Divinity: Original Sin 2. Nevertheless, even if Mutant Year Zero is actually borrowing from other games, it is rather subtle and we'd have no issue with pointing at this as a proper way to do it.
The Bearded Ladies
There are two available versions of the game - standard which will set you back $34,99 and Deluxe which will stand at $54,99. The latter will feature digital goodies like wallpapers, soundtrack and art book, as well as access to a beta event. You might want to hold off on the pre-orders until some reviews kick in though, just to be sure.
