It's official. The new Indiana Jones game from Wolfenstein developer Machine Games is coming only to PC and Xbox Series X|S. The PlayStation 5 version of the game has been cancelled. In fact, it was Microsoft who cancelled the version for Sony's console, as soon as they completed the acquisition of Bethesda's parent company Zenimax back in 2020.
The details were revealed at the FTC v Microsoft hearing yesterday when Bethesda's Head of Publishing Pete Hines stated that the company had a contract with Disney to develop the Indiana Jones game for PC, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.
However, once Microsoft bought Bethesda, they went to Disney to change the contract and remove the obligation to release Indy on PlayStation 5. Hines made it clear that Microsoft/Bethesda have no plans to release Indiana Jones on PlayStation 5 at any point in the future.
Some would say that this was pretty obvious since Microsoft now own Bethesda and the game was announced shortly after the merger was completed. But many believed that there was still a good chance that Indiana Jones launches on PlayStation 5 since the contract was signed for multiplatform development.
It remains to be seen if more details about this Indiana Jones contract with Disney surface in the coming days as Microsoft Gaming head Phil Spencer also appears on the court. FTC lawyers have been asking plenty of questions about the exclusivity deals that Microsft made lately so it's certainly possible that we get more breaking news from this hearing.
We still don't know anything about Indiana Jones as the information provided by Bethesda is pretty scarce. We only have a confirmation that Machine Games are working on the game while Todd Howard is the executive producer.
Oh, and Howard said it's a mashup of genres and unlike any other game on the market, which does sound a bit exciting.
