Owlcat Games has shared comprehensive details about The Expanse: Osiris Reborn's companion system, revealing mechanics that emphasise permanent consequences and deep character relationships. Most significantly, developers confirmed certain characters can die permanently based on player choices, with no option to reverse these outcomes.
"The Expanse universe is cruel and some characters might die because of your choices," the developers stated, underlining the weight of decision-making throughout the campaign. This permadeath system extends to companions players invest time developing, raising stakes for moral decisions and tactical failures. Some players may not like such a system, but I think it adds a lot of depth to the game.
So how do the companions work? Well, each companion belongs somewhere in The Expanse universe with their own background, struggles, and connections. During major plot events, companions provide opinions, hint toward decisions, and offer assistance including crucial contacts for advice or military support. These relationships evolve based on player investment, with the option to help companions through personal struggles or ignore them entirely.
Romance options are confirmed, though developers won't reveal which companions are romanceable. "It's a small crew on a small ship. Everyone flies in very tight spaces for a very long time. So there is dynamics in the crew," they explained, acknowledging the natural relationships that develop in confined environments.
Combat integration features "combat opportunities" where players order companions to exploit environmental advantages during encounters. This tactical layer adds strategic depth beyond standard companion AI, requiring players to notice and leverage situational opportunities.
Long-term consequences apply to companion choices, meaning decisions made early in the campaign ripple throughout the entire experience. Combined with permadeath, this creates genuine tension around companion missions and dialogue choices.
The Expanse: Osiris Reborn is in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC and does not have a release date yet.
