Bungie confirms that Marathon’s Rewards Passes will never expire and won’t include pay-to-win mechanics, with cosmetics available through premium currency.

The extraction shooter Marathon is implementing a seasonal progression system. However, developer Bungie says its battle passes will never expire. Players will have the option to purchase Rewards Passes that offer both cosmetic and progression rewards.

These passes won’t lock players into a seasonal timeframe, so if you start one and come back six months later, you’ll still be able to complete it at a later date.

Expired battle passes from previous seasons will also be available for purchase at any time. This allows new players to experience the game from the start and acquire earlier cosmetic season rewards.

Rewards Pass Progression and Currency

Completing each Rewards Pass will require SILK, an in-game currency that players earn by playing the game. SILK can be earned by completing contracts, surviving mission deployments, and playing Marathon’s extraction game loop.

Each season will have players complete contracts for six different factions while discovering what happened on Tau Ceti IV. Each offers unique story elements and adds to Marathon’s overarching progression loop.Bungie has confirmed that SILK will not be purchasable with real money.

Players can earn it through gameplay, but spending money on the game will net you a small amount.

Premium Cosmetics Without Pay-to-Win

Marathon will also feature a premium currency that can be purchased with real money called LUX. According to Bungie, players will only be able to spend it on cosmetic items.

The Premium Pass also offers cosmetic-only rewards, so players won’t get any powerful weapons or upgrades if they choose to spend money. Bungie has stated that players will not encounter pay-for-power game mechanics in Marathon. Cosmetics can be unlocked with free gameplay via the in-game Codex.
