Josh Sawyer reveals why Pillars of Eternity 3 might not happen

Pillars of Eternity series Director Josh Sawyer hints that it might be too expensive to try and create a Baldur's Gate 3-style Pillars of Eternity 3 game.

In his latest Q and A video on YouTube, Pentiment and Pillars of Eternity series Director Josh Sawyer has given his answer on whether he'd like to do a big-budget Pillars of Eternity 3, following the massive critical and commercial success of another CRPG - Baldur's Gate 3

Sawyer said that people (presumably at Obsidian) talked about the third game in the Pillars series but that the amount of money spent on Baldur's Gate 3 has to be taken into consideration, suggesting that Microsoft may not want to give Obsidian $100 million (Baldur's Gate 3 budget) for Pillars of Eternity 3.

"People get really antsy when I start talking about number values but [Baldur's Gate 3] wasn't cheap," he says.

Sawyer elaborated that the production quality of Baldur's Gate 3's character models, the cinematics and all the animations was very expensive both in terms of time and money.

I'd add that such a project would also require a lot of manpower, which is something that a mid-sized studio like Obsidian don't have at the moment. It's worth noting that Obsidian also love to have two or more games in the works simultaneously instead of one massive project.

Fallout: New Vegas director also revealed another reason why he might not want to direct Pillars 3. Sawyer feels like he's out of touch with the audience that likes CRPGs like Baldur's Gate 3 and Pillars of Eternity and that even if he got the money to make such a game, it probably wouldn't appeal to the fans of the genre.

"I feel like I don't have the pulse of that audience, even if I ever did," Sawyer said. "Things that they like, don't like mechanically, story-wise, things like that, or I get it but I don't dig it."

"If you want to give me a pile of money to make a game...I'll make it," Sawyer says as he bursts out laughing. "[but] I don't necessarily think it's going to appeal to the audience and make that money back."

Baldur's Gate 3 was a critical and commercial success but it took $100 million and almost seven years to complete

To me, it seems like Josh Sawyer would be open to directing another Pillars of Eternity game but only if that game is a step above everything he's done before, hence the hint to "a pile of money".

Honestly, I think many fans, including myself, would rather see Josh working on a new Fallout game or a sequel to New Vegas rather than another Pillars game.
