Legendary game creator Hideo Kojima has revealed Death Stranding: Isolations, an animated series expanding his philosophical sci-fi franchise beyond interactive entertainment. The hand-drawn anime arrives exclusively on Disney+ in 2027.
Brand New Story and Characters
Death Stranding: Isolations tells an entirely new narrative separate from the games' storyline about Sam Bridges reconnecting a fractured America. The anime follows multiple characters grappling with isolation across North America: an elderly man seeking salvation outside the UCA's connectivity network, a female warrior attempting to perpetuate conflict, a boy harbouring grudges against Bridges, and a girl embracing solitude.
Their converging paths explore Death Stranding's core themes - connection, isolation, and humanity's survival - through fresh perspectives rather than retreading Sam Bridges' transcontinental journey. The series takes place in the same timeline as the games, with references to Bridges' activities occurring parallel to the anime's protagonists.
Top-Tier Japanese Animation Talent
E&H production, an emerging Japanese animation studio, handles production duties with director Takayuki Sano helming the project. Character designs come from Ilya Kuvshinov, whose previous work includes Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045, with newly revealed concept art showcasing the anime's distinctive colourful visual style during today's announcement.
The series employs traditional 2D hand-drawn animation rather than CG techniques increasingly common in modern anime production. This deliberate stylistic choice suggests a more intimate, character-focused approach befitting Death Stranding's contemplative pacing and philosophical undertones.
Kojima's First Streaming Partnership
The Disney+ collaboration marks Kojima Productions' first partnership with a global streaming platform, representing significant franchise expansion beyond gaming. Death Stranding originally launched in 2019, captivating over 20 million players with its blend of cinematic storytelling, metaphysical mystery, and gameplay centred on forging connections across desolate landscapes.
Death Stranding 2: On the Beach launched exclusively on PlayStation 5 this past June, continuing Sam Bridges' story whilst introducing new characters and expanding the franchise's mythology. The anime's 2027 release positions it strategically between game instalments, maintaining franchise momentum whilst potentially attracting audiences unfamiliar with interactive entertainment.
