Hideo Kojima revealed that they are developing an anime version of Death Stranding which represents a significant move to extend the celebrated video game series to other entertainment formats. With the upcoming release of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach on June 26, 2025 fuels the mounting enthusiasm for Kojima Productions’ future projects.
Kojima expressed his comprehensive vision for Death Stranding as a multimedia intellectual property during his interview with Vogue Japan as reported by VGC. He revealed that his studio together with A24 will create a live-action movie version of Death Stranding. Kojima distinguished between adaptation approaches by pointing out The Last of Us as a faithful adaptation and The Super Mario Bros. Movie as entertainment made for fans.
Kojima noted his film enthusiast background while acknowledging the inherent merits of these works leads him to explore cinema's expressive possibilities. I want to create an adaptation of Death Stranding that exists only in film format and has the potential to secure awards from prestigious festivals like Cannes and Venice.
Death Stranding Anime
Kojima has designated the upcoming Death Stranding anime series as an essential element of Phase 2 for Kojima Productions. The initial phase of Kojima Productions included the creation of the Death Stranding IP and the development of its following sequel.
Phase 2 involves branching out the Death Stranding universe into new formats which include anime and live-action films.
Kojima has presented the anime project as a natural extension of the franchise’s emotional narrative. The series examines its main characters and themes in more depth with a special focus on fatherhood and identity.
Death Stranding 2: Exploring Fatherhood and Emotional Depth
Sam and Lou travel together in the original Death Stranding but Sam shows minimal curiosity about Lou's identity. The sequel will reflect this change and elicit that emotion as he described.
The sequel reportedly shifts its focus from Metal Gear’s theme of exceeding forebears to new explorations of parenting and personal identity alongside legacy.
Final Thoughts
Kojima Productions is building Death Stranding into a lasting multimedia franchise with upcoming anime adaptations, a live-action film production and the release of Death Stranding 2 drawing near.
Death Stranding’s current strategy positions it to become a leading cross-platform intellectual property in the gaming industry.
