Heroes of Newerth, one of the MOBAs that spawned after the original DotA, has closed its doors after more than a decade.
Once upon a time, MOBA games were all the rage and everyone wanted to get in on the market, and we mean everyone - from big companies like Epic Games and EA to the small studios and groups of friends working on passion projects.
S2 Games didn't have the size of some of the biggest names on the market but they did create a MOBA that would become one of the biggest on the market. Heroes of Newerth rivalled League of Legends for a few years until the latter just exploded in popularity and simply ran away with it.
HoN continued on for a few years more before the end of support would be announced and the server shutdown soon after. Now that the time has come, the servers have been taken down and the game is no longer available to anyone.
Between HoN and LoL, this was the game that was closer to the DotA rules but now that Dota 2 dominates the market where MOBA players who didn't click with LoL are, it's hard to imagine many will feel the void left by HoN's departure.
Then again, if someone feels highly nostalgic, it's not impossible that people will bring up private servers at some point, this has happened before with a number of games.
