Gears 5 multiplayer director Ryan Cleven has recently stated that The Coalition's game will not feature a battle royale mode at launch, insisting marrying the game's 'intimate combat' with the battle royale mechanic is quite a challenge.

Of course, the fact that implementing Gears 5 battle royale would be challenging doesn't mean it's impossible, and The Coalition are admittedly big fans of the genre, so there's hope yet for BR fanatics.

Nevertheless, the studio's head honcho Rod Fergusson echoed a similar sentiment, claiming they won't do battle royale just to do it, as it's not exactly what Gears 5 is about.

In an interview with IGN, Clevin said, "As a fan of the genre I would love to see it, but bringing the intimate combat of Gears to the open kind of organic encounters of a battle royale is difficult. They're two very different modes of combat."

He stressed that it's not impossible, but that it would take serious focus, the sort of which is currently reserved for the main game itself. Furthermore, The Coalition intend to go about any possible additions with assistance and feedback from the community.

"We're big fans of the battle royale genre, but we would want to ensure we bring a battle royale mode to Gears in a meaningful way. We're actively listening to our Gears community and will look to further evolve our game modes based on player feedback post-launch", he told Gamespot.

Whether you like it or not, battle royale has been quite popular and consequently lucrative. It certainly helps that it doesn't suffer from player quitting problems that can ruin team-based multiplayer matches, but it remains to be seen whether The Coalition and Microsoft go for it.
