Epic's latest limited time mode for Fortnite: Battle Royale seems to be laying the groundwork for the game's esports aspirations, seeing as how the company worked out rules, a ranking system and set a 50,000 V-Bucks prize for the winner.

Worry not, because Epic haven't meddled with Fortnite's mechanics or nothing. The mode simply ranks how you do in your first 50 Solo Showdown matches and places you on the ladder accordingly.

There's no skill based matchmaking, we're talking pure, unadulterated Fortnite carnage, which will be tracked, ranked and rewarded. The ranking system is pretty straightforward, as you can see from the image below. A set number of points is awarded for specific rank and the one with most points in 50 matches takes home the prize.

Epic have decided to award the best placed Fortnite player with 50 thousand V-Bucks. Second to fourth place will take 25 thousand; fifth to 50 will get 13,500 while spots 51 to 100 will take away 7,500 V-Bucks. If there was ever a time to prove your skill is worth money, this may be it.

Interestingly, Fortnite's official announcement of the Solo Showdown LTM says Epic are using the mode as a "stepping stone to learn how to build great events for all types of players." Even more interesting is the "major announcement about competitive play" they're planning for next week, which most certainly smells of esports.

As for Solo Showdown standings, Epic said they'll be updating the standings on their . The event lasts until Monday, 21 May 2018 so if you're keen on a reality check on how exactly you fare against the world's best, this may be a good time to do so. Not like you have anything to lose.

We suspect Fortnite's Twitch figures will soon be skyrocketing even higher, because winning comes with higher stakes this time around. We can probably forget about overly goofy gestures because not only could you lose your rightful V-Bucks, there's pride to play for here too. Especially for your usual suspects like Ninja or .
