People Can Fly and Epic Games really want to be in the first wave of games riding the success of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, so Fortnite's Battle Royale game mode will be free to play across all platforms starting 26 September 2017.

It's high time everyone started jumping on the battle royale bandwagon, and Fortnite wants to be in the first wave. This particular take on the battle royale genre features building mechanics and unlike PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, it will be free-to-play starting 26 September 2017.

Similar to PUBG, Fortnite's battle royale will have microtransaction items, but the developers have promised that the items players can buy or probably grind towards will be purely cosmetic.

When compared to PUBG, this execution of the genre will be a lot lighter in visual and overall tone, and unlike its chief inspiration, it will be available on all three major gaming platforms right of the bat. This includes PlayStaion 4, Xbox One and PC. Nintendo will have to make their own version of PUBG for the Switch it seems, or just crack the whip at some studio that will do it for them.

The game's test servers are already running the game mode, and everyone who can't be bothered with testing will get their chance to try the 100-player last man standing mode next week.

Both Epic Games and People Can Fly have a long and fruitful history of making games of the shooty variety, so we will have a look at what twists seasoned developers can come up with for the infant genre.
