Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the disbandment of its Apex Legends UK Quality Assurance (QA) team, impacting approximately 50 contracted workers. The news came during a 'Business Update' Zoom call, where affected individuals were informed that their contracts would not be renewed.
Interestingly, managers and project leads were reportedly unaware of the decision until after the call, highlighting the unexpected nature of the announcement.
Established in 2022, the UK QA team played a crucial role in maintaining the quality and integrity of Apex Legends, beginning from Season 16 onward. Despite the team's commendable performance, with sources indicating that all internal targets and goals were met, the decision not to renew contracts was attributed to a "restructuring of the business." Notably, this move is distinct from the previous layoffs of 670 employees from EA in late February, suggesting a separate strategic adjustment within the organisation.
Expressing surprise and dismay, one source described feeling blindsided by the news, as the expectation was for routine contract renewals to support future plans for Apex Legends. The suddenness of the decision has left affected individuals scrambling to secure alternative employment opportunities, with some facing imminent contract expirations in a matter of weeks.
This development comes amidst EA CEO Andrew Wilson's recent remarks in March 2024, highlighting the expansive community of "hundreds of millions of players" engaged with Apex Legends. Wilson also teased the game's future expansion "beyond the traditional battle royale universe" later in the year, suggesting ongoing investment and growth initiatives for the franchise. However, the dissolution of the UK QA team underscores the complexities and challenges inherent in navigating organisational changes within the gaming industry.
