Larian Studios and Bandai Namco have announced that Divinity: Original Sin 2 Definitive Edition will have a completely revamped arena mode, which will be available immediately at launch when Definitive Edition lands on 31 August 2018.
According to Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe and Larian Studios' official announcement, an entirely new and improved Arena Mode for Divinity: Original Sin 2 - Definitive Edition will be available at launch. It is a rather odd choice of words since "improved" implies there were versions before it, while "entirely new" implies the opposite.
Either way, Arena Mode will be available for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One at the same time and will feature solo gameplay, online multiplayer PvP and pass-the-controller local multiplayer. This mode will introduce 16 characters, some of which have not been available in the game previously.
Examples of such characters are Malady, Radeka and the legendary wizard that doesn't quite inspire sisterly love - Zandalor. Each of them will have their own unique skill set, hopefully more useful than what Zandalor showed against the Void Dragon in the first Divinity: Original Sin.
Arena Mode will have two separate game modes, Classic Deathmatch and Kill the King. Deathmatch will be somewhat true to its name, as players will have to fight until just one of them remains, but no respawns are included.
Kill the King is reminiscent of objectives in MOBA games as each team will be tasked with killing the opposing team's VIP, and both will have to defend their own.
Each of these modes can be played across 13 maps that have been allegedly optimised for turn based combat. Each map will contain three different types of chests that can be looted during the fight - Destruction coffer, Control Coffer and Source Coffer.
Destruction Coffer will contain destruction scrolls, Control Coffer will contain control scrolls and Source Coffer will "contain powerful spells". The last one's description is somewhat odd, as it will likely contain spell scrolls as well.
Mutators will be another addition to the new Arena Mode, and they will give skills or change parameters during the battles. An example was made of a Movement Mutator which can give magical wings to all heroes, allowing them to make long distance travels in a different round. On some other occasions, the Mutators will simply reduce heroes' health to minimum levels and make the game presumably more dynamic.
