Stunning pixel-graphics title Replaced is finally arriving. Sad Cat Studios confirmed the cyberpunk 2.5D platformer launches March 12, 2026, on PC, Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass, ending nearly five years of uncertainty following multiple delays since the game's initial 2021 Xbox showcase announcement.
Long development and multiple delays
Replaced was first revealed at the 2021 Xbox showcase, generating significant buzz for its striking visual style and atmospheric cyberpunk setting. Since then, the game has suffered considerable delays, repeatedly pushing back release windows and frustrating fans anticipating the stylish platformer.
Nearly five years between announcement and launch is substantial for what appears to be a mid-sized indie project, but this once again proves just how hard it is to make video games, especially if you're a small team. Whether March 2026 represents genuinely finalised development or another optimistic target remains uncertain until the game actually ships.
The new release date trailer showcases the game's atmospheric environments - from the depths of dirty and gray sewers to stunning forests and abandoned factories. Visually, it's truly gorgeous, especially the smooth animations, which are half of the appeal, at least for me.
What is Replaced
Players control R.E.A.C.H., an artificial intelligence forcibly trapped in a human body, navigating Phoenix-City in an alternate 1980s America scarred by nuclear catastrophe. The dystopian setting emphasises corruption, organ trafficking, and societal collapse - standard cyberpunk dystopia beats blended with retro-futuristic aesthetics.
Gameplay mixes cinematic platforming with "free-flow action combat". The 2.5D perspective uses pixel art styling with 3D environmental depth, creating that trendy modern-retro visual approach popular amongst indie action games.
Xbox console exclusive with Game Pass
Replaced launches on Steam and Xbox Series X|S with day-one Game Pass availability. No PlayStation or Nintendo platforms announced, though timed exclusivity could eventually bring the game elsewhere after the initial Xbox window expires.
For Game Pass subscribers, it's a risk-free opportunity to experience what Sad Cat Studios has crafted after years of development delays. Whether it delivers on cyberpunk atmosphere and fluid action combat, or disappoints after prolonged anticipation, we'll discover on March 12, 2026.
