Sony still have the marketing rights for Call of Duty games despite the Microsoft Activision Blizzard deal. The beta for Modern Warfare 2 will arrive first to PlayStation consoles.
After many leaks and speculations, Activision have officially revealed Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, which is coming this October. The publisher already revealed some details such as editions, beta and release platforms.
Since this is the first Call of Duty title after the Microsoft Activision Blizzard deal was announced many players were left wondering what would that mean for the game and whether Xbox would get any exclusive content like PlayStation in previous years.
Well, since the Microsoft Activision Blizzard deal is yet to be officially closed, this year's Call of Duty will not be exclusive to Xbox and won't have any exclusive content. Head of Microsoft Gaming Phil Spencer also confirmed that Microsoft will honor existing marketing deals between Sony and Activision.
This means that the beta for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 will be first on PlayStation consoles, as confirmed by Activision. The beta date is yet to be revealed, but we expect to hear more details on this when we see the first trailer for the game on June 8, 2022.
As for the future of the franchise, once Activision Blizzard officially join the Microsoft Gaming family, we expect to see plenty of exclusive content for Xbox and perhaps even an exclusive Call of Duty game.
But until Phil Spencer and Activision Blizzard CEOs sit at the roundtable and explain their plans to the public, take everything with a grain of salt.
Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 is set to launch on October 28, 2022.
