Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 campaign is now out for those who pre-ordered the game and those who got to play it early, are somewhat disappointed by the structure of missions and the new feature called "Open Combat" which brings larger open areas for players to explore and take different paths during missions.
It's a bold move from Activision and Sledgehammer Games, who tried to bring something new to Call of Duty singleplayer but sadly, it didn't pay off. Many Call of Duty fans are adamant that "Open Combat" design has no place in the Call of Duty campaign.
The main issue with the new feature, as the players say it, is the lack of unique maps and very uninspired objectives. "These missions are so uninspired and lazy. It's just a snippet of the Warzone map with random objectives to run around press X on," one player wrote.
Other players added that Call of Duty's classic linear style missions like in Modern Warfare 2019 are what makes the single-player campaign enjoyable. They argue that open design ruins the immersion as it loses that cinematic feeling that Call of Duty campaigns provide.
While we are yet to play Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 campaign and can't really comment on the open combat structure, we are in favour of linear missions. Some of our favourite Call of Duty campaign moments include All Ghillied Up and Clean House from previous Modern Warfare games.
It will be interesting to see if Activision and their internal teams continue with similar campaign design in future Call of Duty games. We would not be surprised if the devs decided to scale back on the open combat in the next Call of Duty game as players are not quite impressed by the new structure.
But overall, regardless of the campaign quality, Call of Duty will still sell like hotcakes as the majority of players buy it for its iconic multiplayer.
