Baldur's Gate 3 developer not interested in store exclusivity

Larian Studios announced Baldur's Gate 3 at Stadia Connect but not as a platform exclusive. In fact, Larian Studios insist they will not play the exclusivity card and instead plan to launch Baldur's Gate 3 on as many platforms as possible.

Speaking to IGN, Larian Studios' CEO Swen Vincke said that Baldur's Gate 3's announcement on Stadia does not involve any sort of platform exclusivity.

"It was important to us to tell our players we're not going to participate in the exclusivity game", he said.

Indeed, Baldur's Gate 3 is already up on Steam , whose page reads, "An ancient evil has returned to Baldur's Gate, intent on devouring it from the inside out. The fate of Faerun lies in your hands. Alone, you may resist. But together, you can overcome."

Vincke is pretty excited over Google Stadia and its capabilities both in terms of hardware and the social component. It makes interconnectivity a breeze, which should come in be handy during "more than 100 hours" worth of Baldur's Gate 3 gameplay.

"If you want to play that multiplayer it takes a lot of investment and syncing up with each other. If they can just do it on one link on any device that's a lot easier to start doing it rather than having to sit behind your PC", he said.

He also mentioned that inherent practicality of Google Stadia is a huge plus, because it allows Larian to ramp up production values without worrying how many players will have to sell their kidneys to get to run the game.

Vincke thinks that what Google are doing with Stadia is a "democratization of the platform", and it's hard to argue with that, knowing that not all game-lovers can afford devices to enjoy their passion.

On a related note, Larian already approached Wizards of the Coast about Baldur's Gate 3 after they made Divinity: The Original Sin, but the company told them they were still too inexperienced. Thankfully, the Wizards kept watch and approached them back after the sequel.
