Fortnite: Battle Royale is heading Down Under with their latest tournament that will take place at Margaret Court Arena, Melbourne. We're talking about a solos and duos tournament featuring Australia's best players and 100 celebrities.
Probably the only strange thing about the tournament is that it's dubbed Fortnite Summer Smash, even though it officially starts on 26 January 2018. On the other hand, Australian weather would make just about any competition a Summer Smash so we guess it makes sense.
As for the competition, the solos part of the Fortnite Summer Smash tournament features registration, a qualifying stage and the finals. Players will be awarded points for their performance with the following point system:
Victory Royale: +3 Points
2nd-3rd Place: +2 Points
4th-10th Place: +1 Point
3-4 Eliminations: +1 Point
5-6 Eliminations: +2 Points
7+ Eliminations: +3 Points
Registration starts on 09 January 2019, where the first 500 eligible players are invited to the Margaret Court Arena on 26 January 2019. On the day, Fortnite players will be divided into five groups, each playing 2 matches, with the first 20 from every group moving onto the Grand Finals.
Fortnite Summer Smash's Grand Finals will feature six matches that take place one day later, using the same point system of course. As for the prizes, the winner gets $100,000, although there's plenty to win even if you don't come in first. The prizes are in Australian dollars and the prize pool looks like this:
Solos:
1st place $100,000
2nd-3rd place $50,000
4th-6th place $25,000
7th-10th place $5,000
11th-15th place $3,000
16th-20th place $2,000
21st-100th place $1,000
This seems to be yet another in a long line of firsts for Fortnite, as Australian Open's website says we're looking at the "largest competitive gaming event in Australian history".
The tournament will also feature Pro-Am duos tournament, which takes place just after solos. As was the case with Fortnite's earlier Pro-Am outings, it will have regular competitors and 100 celebrities "from sports, entertainment and the gaming world". The prizes are as follows:
Pro-Am Duos:
1st place $50,000
2nd-3rd place $20,000
4th place $10,000
