Borderlands 3: Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot is the first salvo in an ongoing barrage of substantial campaign add-ons for 2K and Gearbox's leading looter shooter franchise. In Moxxi's Heist, the dastardly Handsome Jack reaches beyond the grave. Cue madness!
Escaping the confines of Pandora was one of the smartest play's Gearbox made with this threequel. Given that the series had potentially mined every possible wacky character design and mission type imaginable, it makes a world of sense for you to be given command of Sanctuary 3 and sent forth into the galaxy.
This planet hopping mechanic helps address criticism of repetition, allowing new antagonists and scenarios to enter the fold, but most of all, provides a narrative excuse for substantial DLC side stories.
Enter Moxxi's Heist, a bespoke and jam packed offering that boasts an entirely new location (Handsome Jack's Casino) and a good old fashioned tale of revenge and money.
Upon arrival, you'll quickly pick up on the fact that this doesn't feel like recycled level geometry; everything here has been built from the ground up to convey the lavish, self-congratulatory ego of your old foe. The detail is impressive, and full of much appreciated flourishes that lean in to the Borderlands aesthetic, and tendency to wink at the camera.
You can place your bets on the various slot machines, or in true Borderlands style, simply smash them open and collect your "winnings". There's optional dialogue in the form of welcome holograms, presented by Jack himself of course, that provide insight into his approach to running the casino, and the notion that once you arrive you won't ever be able to leave.
In terms of style and presentation, Moxxi's Heist is absolutely up there with the very best locations that Borderlands 3 has to offer.
Although there's still an argument to be made that the loop of "enter room, kill enemies, then progress" is hardly ground breaking, there's enough going on here with voiceover dialogue, and the various different enemy types, to prevent too much feeling of stagnation.
It's quite a trip to see former robotic enemies interacting with the newer human A.I, and there's several moments where opposing factions are pitted against one another, leaving you, the player, as the third party wild card.
There's loot to be plundered and secrets to uncover, but it's all in service of a story that's genuinely layered and interesting. Moxxi has always been a standout character, and Handsome Jack himself has long been singled out as the preferred villain of this madcap franchise.
It's very satisfying to see the added depth being added to our understanding of their respective backstories, which makes this perfect for the DLC / Season Pass format.
Ultimately, if you're looking for more bang for your buck from Borderlands 3, you've come to the right place. Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot is a generous offering with plenty to see and do. Immersing yourself in this world has never been more fun.
