Where Winds Meet: Combat Tips and Tricks

One of the strongest suites of Where Winds Meet is most definitely its amazing combat. In this guide, we will try to explain to you how to get the most out of it.

Where Winds Meet isn't your usual RPG where some aspects suffer on account of the others; no, in this NetEase gem, everything is done just right - the exploration, the story, everything. To be fair, this is probably one of the richest games I've ever had a chance to play, and on top of all that, it is free-to-play. Can it get any better? I don't think it can.

As strong as all other aspects of this game are, the combat system seems like something that stands out a lot; the wuxia-based, hack-and-slash combat style is a sight to behold, and once it clicks, you just can't get enough of it.

However, the combat in this game can be overwhelming, especially at the very beginning, so in this guide, we bring you several tips and tricks to make it as smooth and enjoyable as it is supposed to be, so without further ado, let's jump into it.

Combat beginner's tips and tricks

1. Keep the parry indicator on, then turn it off

As the title suggests, the parry indicator can be turned on and off inside the game options, and even if it looks like too much help, it actually isn't. The parry indicator will give you extra time to press parry when it is due. Keep it on until you familiarise yourself with the system. In any case, it will help you parry only two times until the gauge goes empty.

Once you know how to read the enemy moves, go inside the options and turn it off. You'll see how good with parries you actually become.

2. Keep hitting enemies (especially bosses) after staggering them

The combat system in Where Winds Meet features a stagger mechanic like many other hack-and-slash titles. However, in this game, once the stagger gauge is empty, you'll get a prompt to punish an enemy with a special attack (Y+B on an Xbox controller). Do not do it immediately; instead, keep hitting the enemy until the stagger gauge is almost empty and then press this attack.

This will allow you to deal the extra damage to the enemy while he just sits helplessly. Seriously, do not sleep on this; it can save you in combat, especially on harder difficulties.

3. Parry red attacks

In almost any other game, red means do not try to parry, but dodge instead. While you can dodge those attacks, parrying, even though it is tough to time well, will punish the enemy with a devastating counterattack.

Counterattacks usually deal massive stagger damage, and it is highly likely that a couple of those will stagger the enemy, and then you'll be able to apply the previous tip on them.

4. Lock-on on bosses; do not lock-on on multiple enemies

If you fight a single enemy, especially a boss, locking on is the best option. Doing this, not only will you attack the enemy all the time, but the camera will be set behind your back as well.

However, if you're fighting multiple enemies at the same time, the best option is not to lock on to them. Go to the options and change 'lock on options' to target the closest enemy. With this option, your character will attack the closest enemy, but if you change the camera direction, you'll start attacking the other enemy.

However, if you lock on to any of them manually, you'll stick to that particular enemy until you kill him. Locking on while fighting a group of enemies will most certainly kill you more than once if you don't follow this simple advice.

And there you have it. Those several tips can literally mean life and death while in combat in Where Winds Meet. Once again, if you find this guide helping, check out the other guides linked below.
