The very first task in Monster Hunter Wilds, the latest action RPG from Capcom, once you gain control of your character for the first time, will be to save a random child who is chased by very agile monsters. During this mission called Desert Trotters, a huge sinkhole will start sucking in the child and the monster, and you'll need to react.
Luckily, since this mission is a tutorial one, you'll have an unlimited amount of time to do what is required of you, but this task can be extremely confusing given how tense the whole situation actually is.
If you don't know what to do to make this rescue, we've prepared a guide that will show you the solution to this very confusing situation. So, without further ado, let's get on with it.
How to save a child from a sand sinkhole in the opening mission
After you gain control of a mount and start chasing after the child, avoiding monsters will be scripted, and none of them can hurt you. After one of the monsters catches up with a child, a huge sinkhole will form, and you'll be tasked with saving her.
Do not get confused and aim for a child or a monster; that won't do a thing. Instead, aim for the flying monsters called Wingdrakes circling around them. Once successfully aimed, press the Circle button (PlayStation controller), and your character will gain a Screamer Pod required to take down the monster.
Once you have it, aim at the monster with L2 and hit it with R2. If you did everything correctly, the monster will fall and the cutscene will begin. After that, you'll need to take several more of them down, but now you'll know the drill—take them down with Screamer Pods. If you run out, get more from a Wingdrake.
