You might be surprised to learn that Dead Island 2 doesn't have difficulty levels; instead, this FPS survivor from Deep Silver uses a very smart system in which difficulty increases as you progress through the game and unlock new skills.
These skills are divided into four categories: abilities, survivor, slayer, and numen, and each category uses cards that serve as some sort of perk for your skills. These cards can be obtained by completing the main missions as well as side quests.
To choose the right card for the right playstyle can be a decisive element between life and death, so in this guide, we will try to help you decide which cards to choose at the beginning of the game and which cards will stick for a longer period of time.
The best skills and cards for starters
Dodge/block ability
The first skill that will be unlocked early in the game will be the one under the Abilities tier, and very soon you will be able to choose between the abilities to block and dodge enemy attacks. Our strong recommendation would be dodge because it will get you out of some very tricky situations—take our word for it. Given that you will have to choose between those two, dodge will always be a better option.
Safety first
Under the survivor tier, inside the skills menu, definitely one of the must-haves is the Safety First card. You will find yourself very often in a situation where a lot of zombies are attacking you and you are short on first aid kits. The best way to heal in such situations is to perform perfect dodges or blocks, if you decide to choose the block card over the dodge one.
Invigorating
This card can also be obtained very early in the game and is extremely useful, especially in combination with the previous one. If you manage to execute a perfect dodge, this will give you a health boost and the ability to counterattack your opponent. Execute the counterattack perfectly, and you will regain half of your health. This tactic is extremely useful when surrounded by zombies.
The limb reaper
Since the third tier of skills unlocks a little later in the game, The Limb Reaper card will become available later too, but once it is available, stick with it because it's very useful. Once you stun a zombie, it will stumble on the ground, and you will be prompted to press the button to maim it. If you choose this card, maiming will regain you some health and give you an advantage in a battle against overwhelming enemies.
There are more very useful cards to use and to define your playstyle in Dead Island 2, but those four will be available early in the game and are without doubt the best choice if you intend to survive the zombie-infested California.
