Sony have apparently started sending email invites to PSN ID change beta, but only to UK users for the moment. Some may see it as preferential treatment, but the proper words should be bad treatment of anyone who dares change their ID.
According to a report on PlayStation Brahs, Sony has that not all games and applications for PS4, PS3, PS Vita and other PlayStation systems will support the Online ID change feature. Sure, it doesn't sound that bad yet, but here are the real kickers - you may lose access to content that you have acquired for your games, including add-ons and virtual currency.
That one may be the worst offender, but it would also hurt if you one day booted up your PS4 and found that you have lost your Witcher 3 save game data that you spent hundreds of hours on, leaderboards in Fortnite and trophy progress in just about any game. Yes, that can happen too if you change your ID. On top of all these issues, "parts of your games and applications might not function properly, both online and offline" should be a real cherry on the fail cake Sony are trying to feed you.
So, let's hypothetically say that you are desperate to change your previous Online ID and are willing to risk it all for the sake of having a different name. That should solve some of your problems, right? Wrong. Apparently, your previous Online ID might still show up to you and other players in some places.
Surely, such a terrible service shouldn't be charged for. Wrong again. Players will be able to change their ID once for free, but will have to pay $9.99/€9.99 / £7.99 for each change afterwards. One would think tagging an account with a different name would not be that much of an issue, but folks at Sony may have dropped the ball.
